Traveling to Grand Cayman with Kids: What You Need to Know

Grand Cayman is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the Caribbean, and we say that from experience. After hosting hundreds of families at BeachLane, we've picked up a thing or two about what makes a Cayman family holiday truly great.

Getting Here

Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) is small and efficient. Immigration lines are usually manageable, and you'll be out and in a taxi within 30 minutes of landing. The drive to Seven Mile Beach takes about 15 minutes.

Tip: Book a car seat in advance with your rental car company. Not all agencies stock them, and availability during peak season can be limited.

The Beaches

Grand Cayman's beaches are genuinely safe for children:

  • Seven Mile Beach — calm, shallow water with a gentle sandy bottom. Perfect for toddlers and non-swimmers.
  • Cemetery Beach — quieter than Seven Mile Beach with great snorkeling close to shore. Older kids will love it.
  • Starfish Point — shallow, warm water where kids can see real starfish in their natural habitat. Bring water shoes.
  • Smith Cove — sheltered coves with calm water, picnic tables, and shade. A local favourite for family afternoons.

Best Activities for Kids

Cayman Turtle Centre

This is the number one family attraction on the island, and for good reason. Kids can hold baby turtles, swim in the turtle lagoon, explore a nature trail, and visit the bird aviary. Plan for at least 2-3 hours.

Dolphin Discovery

Right next to the Turtle Centre, Dolphin Discovery offers supervised dolphin encounters that kids absolutely love. Multiple programs are available for different age groups.

Stingray City Sandbar

An unforgettable experience for the whole family. You'll stand in waist-deep water on a sandbar in the middle of the North Sound while friendly southern stingrays glide around you. Suitable for kids who are comfortable in the water. Book a tour with Captain Marvin's or Red Sail Sports (catamarans — great if anyone gets seasick).

Crystal Caves

A guided tour through spectacular underground caverns filled with stalactites and crystal formations. Kids are fascinated by the caves, especially the one with tree roots growing through the ceiling. Tours run every hour.

Eating Out with Kids

Most restaurants in Grand Cayman are welcoming to families. A few that are especially good with children:

  1. Macabuca Tiki Bar — relaxed atmosphere, simple menu, right by the water
  2. The Brixton — excellent pizzas that kids love
  3. Lloyd's Smokehouse — barbecue and big screens keep everyone happy
  4. Coccoloba — sand between your toes, tacos on the table

Groceries & Supplies

Stock up at Foster's Republix in West Bay — it's a full-service supermarket with everything you'd find at home, plus local specialities. They carry children's medicines, sunscreen, nappies, and all the essentials.

Important: grocery stores in Grand Cayman are closed on Sundays. Plan your shopping accordingly, or use McRuss Grocery Store which is open 24/7 (prices are higher).

Sun Safety

The Caribbean sun is strong — much stronger than most families expect. Our essentials:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+) — apply 30 minutes before going outside
  • Rash guards for the kids — much easier than constant sunscreen reapplication
  • Hats and shade — especially between 11 AM and 3 PM
  • Hydration — keep water bottles filled and accessible

What We Provide at BeachLane

BeachLane is set up with families in mind. We provide beach toys, snorkeling gear, a high chair, a pack-and-play crib, and board games. The condo has a full kitchen for preparing meals, and the washer/dryer means you can pack lighter.

The beach is literally steps from the front door — no loading the car, no parking, no long walks with gear. Just grab your towels and go.

Grand Cayman is one of those rare destinations where the whole family — from toddlers to grandparents — genuinely has a wonderful time. We hope to welcome your family soon.
